CHAPTER 12
Jake and Al were quiet as they headed back to the office. Both of them were mentally trying to unravel what theyâd learned. Things had shifted and changed a lot from what theyâd originally assumed when theyâd started the case that morning. What had really happened to Javier De Leon?
Was it just a tragic accident like the police had believed so many years ago? Or was it actually something much worse? Could someone have shoved him down the stairs and let everyone believe it was an accident? And if someone had, was it some kind of freak accident or had it been intentional?
After all these years had gone by, it was hard to see how they could ever find out. After what theyâd heard from Carson Jenkins, Jake was starting to get worried about Cooperâs involvement. They needed to get more information, but it wasnât looking good for Cooper, and it didnât look like getting that information was going to be easy.
âI gottaâ admit, it feels good to be headinâ back to the office,â Al said as they drove down the street, moving along with the flow of traffic.
âItâs definitely been an interesting day, hasnât it?â Jake sighed. He felt a little bad for heading back to the office and calling it a day, but so much had happened that he was both mentally and physically exhausted.
Al looked at the city as they exited the freeway and came down the off ramp. âYeah, and we got a much earlier start than normal. Feels like weâve been all over the city, and the only thing weâve accomplished is havinâ more questions,â Al said, clearly frustrated.
âWell, we did get a few answers. At least we arenât as clueless as we were this morning,â Jake said as they turned onto the street where their office was located.
âYeah, but it ainât enough to make a difference in the case,â Al grumbled. He wasnât mad, but sometimes he got a little fatalistic when things werenât going well. Jake couldnât blame him, because sometimes he had the same tendency.
Jake pulled the truck into their usual spot and turned off the engine. Al sighed loudly as he reached for the door handle. âCome on, letâs head inside and think this through before we call Cooper and let him know what weâve found.â
As Jake followed Al inside, he realized something crucial. Cooper knew they were good at what they did and that they wouldnât stop until theyâd found out the truth. That had to mean Cooper wasnât guilty. After all, why hire people who would work tirelessly to find out the truth if you didnât want the truth to be found out?
That realization lifted a weight off of Jake he hadnât realized was there. Of course Cooper hadnât had anything to do with Javierâs death. He wouldnât have involved them if he had.
Al pulled out his phone and began to dial Cooperâs number as Jake got the big whiteboard they used on their more intricate cases when they were trying to work through something.
